all these little lies
and most of them are mine

Lyndon Port had never been a quiet town. Even in the dead of night did the market streets flourish, the bright shop lights casting dark shadows in every which way. Strangers milled about, filling the streets with their boisterous presence as they gawked, bargained, and otherwise gambled their lives away unaware of the port’s seedier underbelly. Yet, there were those were smart enough to avoid the darker corners and alleys the streets had to offer. Opting, instead, to bathe themselves in the security of the more brightly lit areas.

It was in one of these corners that Wes resided. An alleyway, to be precise, tucked away behind a myriad of curtains and sheets. Those that entered would find nothing more than cigarette butts, garbage, and a few trashcans.

They had arrived early in the morning to Lyndon Port, he and the bouncer. Kiigan was his name. Employed more out regulation than any other real necessity, Wes had been keeping his eye on the blue-haired man ever since his first day at the casino. The Ivory Jewel very rarely saw any real commotion aside from its boisterous clients, but when it did things tended to escalate. And it was during one of these that the man had caught Wes’s attention. Had it not been out of the corner of his eye maybe he might’ve missed it.

Call it vested interest, but Wes had kept tabs on the bouncer ever since and had as of recently invited him to be his personal guard. He vaguely explained the nature of his business, something along the lines delivering a gift to an old friend. Surprisingly, Kiigan accepted the offer. He was either a risk taker or off his marbles. Then again, it could have been the offer of a raise.

Upon arrival did Wes make sure to show him where they would rendezvous, adding in an extra piece of information:

“You’re going to be handed a package, a suitcase, alright? Sometime in the night. You’ll know who it is when you see them. If not, they’ll find you. Once you have it, come to me. Understand? Under any circumstance. Don’t. Open. The case.” Wes had said, before telling him he was free to do as he pleased until then.

So now he waited, cigarette in hand as he leaned against one of the alley’s walls. He checked his watch. Almost time.

Kiigan better hurry.

Thank Fleuve'ir for the Ivory Jewel! A bouncer being bounced from tavern to tavern didn't pay well at all, and he was still paying yet another tavern back for the damages a certain pink-haired annoyance helped rack up but didn't stick around to reimburse. It was a stroke of luck that he found the opening at the higher-paying establishment, but it still wasn't quite paying enough. Kiigan was getting desperate to pay off his debt, especially with that cranky owner sending Adventurer's Guild peons to harass him and take his last vigs. It'd be nice to be able to buy himself enough food to fill his stomach...

The blue-haired man would have nearly jumped at any opportunity to make more coin, so it was a no-brainer when the boss offered him a pay raise simply to be his personal guard and gopher it seemed. Kiigan was great at fighting and smart enough to follow instructions, so he had that going for him. Even as they arrived early in the morning and he received his marching orders, Wes got nothing more than a "Yes, boss," before Kiigan disappeared into the port city to waste time.

It was funny how persuasive money could be. At home on Ilyanor, currency meant almost nothing. Nature was king and food was grown and harvested personally, for the most part, and all it cost was a prayer of thanks. Clothing was cheap but basic since showing off was rare for his race. He'd quickly learned its importance outside of the Gaiyan haven, but had yet to get enough to not live in panic. Otherwise, Kiigan wasn't particularly compliant with authority figures, and even less inclined to do menial things asked of him. The power of Vyldergold!

Being poor as he was, he didn't have too much fun roaming around the bustling and chaotic Lyndon Port. He'd twisted three pickpocket arms, been whisked into fashion stores only to be booted back out when they discovered he couldn't buy anything for his impressive frame, and peered longingly into some questionable drinking establishments chocked full of half-naked girls. One good thing was his belly was full. Kiigan had learned the art of dining on cafe samples on every street, so his stomach was at least satisfied though he was bored out of his skull.

Irritably thinking that he was being pranked, the rebellious angel was just about to pick a fight with some loud drunk guy when he heard a very quiet "Ey you, over 'ere" from under the docks.

She was positively ghastly. This poor woman, or at least he thought it was a woman, was hunched over and dragged her longer leg behind her as she slothed into the flickering lamplight. Scraggles of gray hair jutted out every which way, tied in a useless bun at the nape of her neck. Despite the dark, musty cloak, a tan suit was pulled around her lumpy frame with the jacket one deep breath from ending its poor buttons' lives. He half expected one of the buttons to pop off at him like a flintlock's bullet. Bugged eyes popped out at him from under spiderleg lashes, and her overlined lips parted to reveal a humongous snaggletooth that he simply could not stop staring at. "You're who I'm supposed to meet?" he asked incredulously, crimson hues still locked on that tooth.

She made some sort of noise at him, possibly a word that he didn't register as she shoved a brown leather suitcase into his hands. His eyes had finally moved from the snaggletooth to the large mole with thick black hairs poking out like pins in a cushion, and he was marveling over her mere existence when she basically crab-walked away in a shocking display of speed, disappearing into the shadows of the dock as if she'd never been there at all. The boss had some very weird associates.

While the angel wasn't known for his obedience, he held to his promise that he wouldn't open the suitcase. Of course, he was exceptionally curious about whatever Hairymole McSnaggletooth could have that Wes would want, but money. He didn't want to risk his payday. Hurrying to the rotten smelling rendezvous point among the sheets and curtains, he pushed some fabric out of the way until the man with the weird little smoke sticks came into view. "Took forever, but here it is," he said with a light scowl, towering over the redhead as he held out the package.

all these little lies

“Clearly,” Wes said as he removed himself from his position on the from the wall, the cigarette bobbin ever so slightly between his lips as he spoke. His attention went to the suitcase as Kiigan held it up to his face, causing him to reach for it with a bit of grumble as it may have been a bit higher than was normally expected. Bringing it up to his ear, Wes shook the suitcase gently. Whatever was inside clinked and shifted, letting out a sound like coins bundled closely together. Then, silence.

“…Are you sure you didn’t open it?”

At the question did Wes’s eyes lock with Kiigan’s own – his face turning into a serious, almost accusatory look. Smoke billowed from his mouth.

“You know, I don’t quite take to being cheated,” he said, letting the silence fall between then once more his brows furrowing as his gaze became more intent.

Then…

He smiled.

“I’m kidding!” he nudged Kiigan on the shoulder (or at least somewhere near). “You should really lighten up, you know. Smiling could do you some good from time to time. Since, ya know, you never know which day could be your last, after all~” he said, and despite the resounding cheer, Wes’s face immediately went back to normal as he turned away from the bouncer. Urging him with a soft “come on” he walked down the alley. However, as he rounded a corner and his hand went into his pocket Wes seemed to remember something.

Just where were his manners?

Stopping momentarily, his hand fumbled around some more in pocket as the coat around his shoulders slipped slightly behind his arm. A dagger, hidden away in a holster, came into view at his side. Yet, as Wes’s hand slipped out of his pocket, he produced a square and beat-up carton of cigarettes of some strange brand along with some matches. He held the box out to Kiigan as an offer to take one.

“I know I didn’t exactly explain much of what we’re doing today. So, if you have any questions, now’s a good a time as any to ask,” he said. Whether or not Kiigan took a cigarette Wes would continue walking.

Back-Alley Business | Kiigan Empty Re: Back-Alley Business | Kiigan

Post by Kiigan Wed May 26, 2021 3:38 pm

Kiigan exhaled. There was something about being accused of something he didn't do before he got paid that had him holding his breath as if he was afraid this little man would turn into a viper and fang his ankle or something. He also wasn't really one to correct people when they thought the worst of him, though. He preferred for the truth to make itself known, as if was indisputable when the other person came to the conclusion on their own. No one ever believes the guy who screams "I DIDN'T DO IT!"

As he was nudged and some color wandered back into his face, he did let out a short, single-grunt laugh of sorts, though it didn't reach his lips. They were still pressed into a slight frown, but that was normal. He wasn't the smiley type unless something really good or really bad was happening. In a way, the reduction in the downward curve of his frown was his form of half-attempting to heed Wes's words.

At least if today was the last day of his life, he wouldn't have to worry about paying off that club owner anymore. Friggin' miser.

Wes's beckon pulled him along behind him, following his boss dutifully until he knew what he was expected to do next. There was a brief adrenaline spike when the ginger reached under his coat and the dagger came into view. It looked like he was going for the weapon, and for just a second Kiigan thought Wes's first joke might have been the truth and his claim that the accusation was the joke was the actual joke. Before he could make any defensive reaction, though, the hand slipped into a pocket instead and pulled out a weird box.

The weird box was offered, and out of pure curiosity, Kiigan reached forward to take one. "Thanks," he muttered, crimson eyes bright with interest. Oh, they were the strange paper smoke sticks that Wes had between his lips to make all that odd-smelling smoke. The idea of smoking in this world wasn't entirely foreign-- there were plenty of things to burn and inhale growing in Ilyanor-- but he'd never seen anything quite like these. After lifting it to his nose for a sniff, he held it back out to lit.

"I do have a question, actually," he said as he followed, mind mostly on the smoke stick but capable of multiple trains of thought. "Who was that... woman?" he asked, gruff voice laced with uncertainty and his mind haunted by her fugly face.

Giving Kiigan a small nod, he couldn’t help but notice how the taller man brought the little stick up to his nose. By the look in his eyes, it almost seemed like he had never seen anything like it. And Wes had to wonder whether or not Kiigan had ever smoked before. He kept quiet, however, choosing instead to place his attention elsewhere. His gaze brushed along the rooftops, looking for shadows or figures or anything that could catch his eye. Only when Kiigan asked his question did he stifle a laugh.

Of all the things he could’ve asked.

“Really? That’s your question?” Wes took the cigarette out of his mouth, letting the smoke flow from between his lips. He shook his head in disbelief. You would think he’d be worried more about the contents of the case or, say, what lies ahead. Maybe even ask for any further explanation as to their mission. But, no, creepy old lady it is. Then again: a man who didn’t ask many questions was better than one who asked too many.

“She’s– Well,” Wes started, pondering over how exactly he was going to explain this. “A rarity among my employees. Name’s Millie. Tough ol’ gal. Can you believe she tried to swindle me out of a few good coin back in the day? Tried to take a bite out of me, too.”

Wes made a stabbing motion at Kii with the cigarette between his fingers, the same clinking noise could be heard from the suitcase at the movement. “You should see the scar she left. Had to knock her out before I could get my stuff back. Been working for me ever since.” He placed his hand on his heart, giving a half-hearted look before speaking the only truth thus far.

“Don’t let her looks get to you, it’s not like you’ll ever see her again.”

They rounded another corner. In the midst of their conversation, out of some nook or shadow, did a well-dressed man appear to start trailing behind them. Then, another. Wes didn’t pay them much mind, even as their step quickened, even as one of them seemed to be cracking his knuckles at both of the men before him, he just kept talking.

“Oh, but enough about that. Tell me, why’d you even accept the job offer? Who do you owe money to, huh?” He asked, half-joking, as he exhaled smoke from yet another drag.

Back-Alley Business | Kiigan Empty Re: Back-Alley Business | Kiigan

Post by Kiigan Thu Jun 10, 2021 1:44 pm

Kiigan didn't really care about the case much. He probably should have, but the blue-haired man's brain seemed to be wired a bit differently than most. That and that woman was just so gross that nothing else mattered. "I've never seen anything like her," he offered, the comment off-handed since most of his attention was still on the stick that he'd now managed to light with his finger when Wes wasn't looking. "Even though I think she only had one tooth, I thought she might gnaw my arm off, so I can see it..." Now that he thought about it, she looked like he imagined most witches to look like...

After that comment, Kiigan rose the cigarette to his lips and imitated his boss by inhaling. For a second, every bit of swagger and general defensive grouchiness disappeared and he started to violently hack and cough as if he would die on the spot. "ACK- coff thanks-- Boss--"

Despite the tears in his eyes that he forbade from falling with sheer force of will, Kiigan came out of his coughing fit with a determined glare. Others might have tossed the caustic thing away, but not the angel man. The smoke stick would not defeat him! Especially when this small man walking ahead of him did so with such ease. It was a challenge now, so he'd continue to smoke it and stifle his coughs.

Despite his battle with the cigarette, Kiigan was nothing if not alert. At some point his hand slipped into his pocket and emerged with brass knuckles, though he made no movements to indicate it was aware they were being followed. He seemed rather relaxed except for the deeper frown forming just thinking about his debt. "I owe this club owner a bunch of vigs. This infuriating woman and I accidentally trashed the place, but then she made the owner forget all about her and left me with all the damages. It's a stupid mess," Kiigan explained, feeling a vein throb at his temple.

“Uh,” unsure of how to respond to his companion’s rather rude comments and made a face he could only hope Kiigan hadn’t noticed. This guy was… strange. Stranger than he had initially thought. The bite had been more on the metaphorical side of the story and it seemed that, despite the very animated motions, the message had been entirely lost on Kiigan. So, he was– even though Wes hated to admit– slightly disappointed by the lack of acknowledgement of his mostly skewed story. He really had been stabbed by her.

It was then that a fit of coughs and hacks reached his ear.

Strange and inexperienced.

The face Wes had been making turned twofold, but Kiigan’s complete change in composure urged on an amused grin from the red head as he awkwardly patted the coughing man’s back. Cute. Though it looked like he’d bust a lung if he continued to smoke, “Right, okay,” and Wes could only watch with some degree of he’s-entirely-too-endearing admiration as Kiigan continued his teary-eyed attempts at puffing on the smoke.

“Sounds like it,” he responded shortly after, noticing the deepening frown out of the corner of his eye, “Lemme guess: lover’s quarrel? Though how go about making a guy forget something like that’s beyond me. Must’ve really kicked ‘em in the nogging or something. Magic…?” he left the suggestion up in the air, proceeding then to step in front of Kiigan to face him, though he continued sauntering backwards down the familiar path. He eyed the men behind Kiigan momentarily, then the brass knuckles he had produced.

“Well, tell you what,” he began, the grin further growing at the prospect that ran through his mind. He jabbed a thumb to his own chest, puffing it out in a proud manner as he spoke, “Whatever it was: if you stick with me, I’ll make sure to– Oh?”

In his little display he had bumped into something or, rather, someone. And Wes had to hold on to his hat to keep it from falling off his head. A hand clasped his shoulder and the happy-go-lucky smile he had carried himself with deflated into annoyance. Behind him stood a large man, much larger than the other two who – mimicking the new arrival – also clasped a hand on each of blue-haired individual’s shoulders to remove him from the little boss’s side and God knows what else.

“…Kiigan,” he stabbed the lit end of the cigarette on the hand that had clasped his shoulder all whilst looking at Kiigan dead in the eye. It was his cue to do something about this.

Back-Alley Business | Kiigan Empty Re: Back-Alley Business | Kiigan

Post by Kiigan Sat Jul 03, 2021 11:35 pm

Calling the bullcrap that Daphne had done a lover's quarrel pulsed another vein on his forehead. The mere thought of touching her in any other way other than to strangle her made his skin crawl, but he said nothing to correct it. Explaining that the whole thing was actually the two competing to win over another girl's attention just... was too many words and pointless. And stupid. He took another inhale of the stick and coughed out smoke and frustration.

Kiigan's angry downturn of his lips lessened in severity as Wes turned to walk backward in front of him. Though he wasn't one to return smiles, that didn't mean he didn't appreciate them when he saw them. Wes had a nice one. It looked good on his delicate face. He wasn't very good at reading people, but he got the vibe that it was almost so pure that it seemed devious. It'd have been nice to look at it a little longer, but no, it seemed his brass knuckles would be coming in handy sooner than later.

A strange gleam entered his eyes as the thugs made their move. One had  Wes before Kii could even bark out a warning, and as soon as they had the boss the other two clapped hands on his shoulders like they were old buddies. He jerked a shoulder just to test their grip, which was quite hard, but if they thought they were going to drag him off and keep him busy with a beating, they had another thing coming. Going by his crimson eyes that met Wes's pretty blue ones, Kii seemed almost excited. He loved a good fight. It helped him get all his emotions out and offered him the clarity to work through complicated things. The memo didn't reach his lips, though, which had curled into a more irritated scowl.

"Don't worry, boss," Kiigan said, though what he was going to do filled him with dread. He really hated being put in this type of situation, and while in less deadly scenarios he would go out of his way to avoid certain actions-- even if it made everything more difficult-- he also knew when it was time to set aside his personal issues with his race. "I won't let you get stabbed again," he added. Yes, he'd gotten it earlier, he'd just been too focused on the hag to really respond to that part. He was strange like that.

In a flourish of fabric, light, and feathers, Kii released the seals on his shoulder blades and out unfurled the fluffiest white angel wings, which tore off his shirt in the process. They were about as tall as he was, so their sudden appearance not only knocked off the hands on his shoulders but as he immediately flapped them, the force knocked both thugs off their feet.

While those two fumbled around to get up, the angel flapped his wings again to give himself a speedy boost at the man Wes had just given a nasty smoke stick burn. Since he had momentarily released the gingersnap, the rocket that was Kiigan could slam his brass-knuckled fists into his face, expertly aimed to miss Wes, though his body or wings might have bumped him from proximity. As the man went flying back in a bloody mess, Kiigan was pretty sure he felt something crunch under his fist but didn't pay it much mind.

Stepping back, he resealed his wings out of sight, since it was actually pretty cramped in the alley otherwise and their purpose had been accomplished. He turned on the two who had managed to get back up, flames licking up his arms from his fingertips. While he loved to fight, he knew when to be serious and not drag things out. When he started using his fire, that was a good indication that he wasn't playing.

The ensuing fight was obviously unfair, being two on one, but the well-dressed thugs fought valiantly for longer than Kiigan had thought they would once their third member went down gushing blood from his face. They weren't anything to sneeze at either, but Kiigan had come out on top of fights bigger and badder than this one. Bruised, bloodied, and burned, the two in now destroyed suits were slumped against the wall with the garbage by the time the angel was done.

In the end, Kii'd taken some licks. A nice bruise was forming on his left cheekbone, and his nose and lip were bleeding. There was a deep cut on his right arm from one of the knives unwisely produced in the beginning, but neither seemed keen to keep hold of them once the fire started flying. However, despite the damage, Kiigan seemed more alive and energetic than he was before. He barely registered the pain as adrenaline pumped through his veins. Turning to Wes, there was a ghost of a smile lurking on his lips, probably from the one he'd briefly flashed during the beating.

"Do you wanna ask them any questions? This one's still kinda awake...I think," he said, kicking the dress shoe of one of the men, to which the downed foe answered with a groan.

Huh. So, he did listen. Will you look at that.

He really was a weird one. The look in his eyes was a stark contrast to the deep scowl he wore at the present threat as they almost seemed to light up in the face of confrontation. The annoyance Wes felt lessened, it being slowly replaced by growing curiosity. Yet he’d find his curiosity had quickly turned into fascination just a moment later.

Wes had been prepared to fight then. However, he was not given the slightest chance when he was much too stunned by the unprecedented turn of events. The wings had manifested in a lovely display of plumes and ivory. Even within the dark confines of the alley, the redhead had found it hard not to marvel at the angel. The simplest of thoughts running its course as Wes had found him to be beautiful.

Any further musings had been cut short by the flapping of said wings, regaining Wes’s attention. The two thugs were knocked onto the ground and before Wes could even attempt to defend himself, he found that the largest of the three had was already being done away with. In the act, his forehead had collided against Kiigan’s chest lightly. The astonishment had been clearly visible on the young boss’s face, though the spreading grin was the more concerning part. At the sound of bone breaking, the grin had spread like wildfire, and Wes could do nothing but look up at the man who had just so pleasantly surprised him.

Kiigan had his full attention, the flames flickering up his arms only adding to the fact as he dealt with the two remaining guys that had been knocked over earlier. It seemed to Wes, that by the time they were dealt with, Kiigan was in much higher spirits than he had been throughout the entirety of their walk. And that trace of a smile as Kiigan addressed him only served to excite the redhead all the more.

“Forget that,” flicking the bent cigarette aside, Wes made his way towards Kiigan before setting the suitcase carefully on the floor.

“I think–” he reached up, slightly standing on his toes to cup Kiigan’s face with both hands and lowering it close enough that their eyes could properly meet. “I think I’m more interested in you now,” he said with a slight laugh only to press his lips together in an attempt to avoid the devilish grin from spreading any farther. An entire angel had just fallen into his domain, and you can bet your ass the notion thrilled him. It was a detail that largely made it hard for Wes not to want to proposition him right then and there.

However, as he took in the beginnings of a bruise and the blood, his expression would soften into a frown. He’d gently run his thumb over his lip to do away with the blood, before using his other hand to wipe off his nose. Kiigan was undeniably attractive, and he found himself turning a little bit sour that his face had gotten as beat up as it had, “Do you always keep this a secret? Or were you just holding out on me?” there was no humor to his tone. The question had been asked in all sincerity. He had to keep some amount of level-headedness, after all.

His gaze then lingered over the stab wound, his face turning slightly, “I don’t see why any gaiyan would get themselves into this situation, monetary problems aside.”

Back-Alley Business | Kiigan Empty Re: Back-Alley Business | Kiigan

Post by Kiigan Tue Jul 06, 2021 8:34 am

"I don't like people knowin'," the angel candidly answered, eyes widened slightly in surprise over the way the smaller man grabbed, lowered, and then cleaned his bloody face with his hands. It was a strangely intimate action, wiping away someone else's blood, and the gingersnap's hands were dainty especially compared to the angel's size. His 'halo' emerged despite himself, bathing predominantly his head in a soft, golden glow. The thrill of the fight had almost brought it out, but coupled with Wes's tender actions, it just tipped it over the edge of what he was able to suppress. Tenderness was not something ever afforded to the rebellious angel.

Though he had no choice but to cop to it because of his wings alone, he still dreaded revealing what he was, yet knew how hard a secret it was to keep. His skin literally shimmered in direct sunlight and as much as he tried to keep his emotions in check, the annoying glowing. He could try to hide all these things through various means (magic seals, jackets, bandanas, hats), but anyone who was around long enough would eventually catch on. It didn't seem like the inquisitive man was fond of secrets.

"I'm not really a good example of a Gaiyan," Kiigan conceded, his tone turning a bit bitter as his typical scowl returned. That statement alone barely scratched the surface of all the contradictions he had with his race and his beliefs. It was then he glanced away from Wes's face, following the azure gaze to his dripping arm. Reaching over, he clamped his hand over the wound until he could find something to wrap it with. He didn't seem too bothered by it other than a small wince. "I'm good at fightin' so I stick to what I know and like. Plus, I'm a big fan of making quick decisions and having a mind of my own, so it was best that I see what else is out there beyond Ilyanor for a guy like me."

AKA, he agitated the serene waters of his homeland with his contrarian ways.

The angel wasn't sure if that would satisfy the fedora-crowned boss he returned his gaze to, but it was all he had to say. Maybe one day he'd explain a little more, but only if asked. He wasn't the type to just chat away about himself and his personal issues, since most didn't care to hear it, but he also wasn't a secretive man when he actually spoke. The only thing he tried to bury was the one already freshly unearthed.

“Hmm…?” the soft glow had caught his attention and he had to wonder just what exactly it meant. Had it been at his touch that brought upon such strange a phenomenon Wes wasn’t quite sure, though by circumstance alone it did seem strangely coincidental. Fight. Touch. Glow. He was sure this was what he had noticed out of the corner of his eye back at the Ivory Jewel; that this was what had lent him enough interest in the newly hired bouncer in the first place. He just hadn’t expected to get more than he bargained for over what had been just a hunch.

“For a guy like you, huh,” he repeated, attention still occupied by his very much radiant head. Despite the distraction, Wes released him and began to remove the coat he kept around his shoulders with a sigh. He cleaned his hands on the fabric, properly removing the blood off his gloves. He had questions. Tons of them in fact. Yet he knew pushing too much could end up garnering the opposite of what he wanted for the night, especially as the bluette’s tone shifted and that scowl of his returned. Though the latter of the two was beginning to seem more like a common occurrence. He’d play coy in the meantime with the questions. Then again, the guy did just take a stab for a raise.

“Kiigan who likes fighting, makes quick decisions, and enjoys having a mind of his own,” he mused as he finished wiping, “That’s pretty nifty. I’ll make sure to remember that.”

“Here,” at some point he had reached for one of his daggers and mentally cursed himself for what he was about to do. He neatly ripped a good portion of the coat, crying inside as the fabric came apart with laughable ease. The coat had been one of his favorites, dammit! Begrudgingly, he offered both pieces to Kiigan. “This’ll have for now ‘til I can actually patch you up. Had I known I was gonna be roaming around with the tough guy of angel kind maybe I’d come slightly more prepared,” he teased, though the lingering frown somewhat contradicted the attempt. “I really don’t know much about, well… any of this. But I can at least tell you something: this secret of yours? Safe with me.”

He pointed at his own mouth, though he kept a straight face he tried his best to give him a sheepish smile that waned into the same frown soon after he was done speaking, “Cuz these lips right here? Sealed.”

Back-Alley Business | Kiigan Empty Re: Back-Alley Business | Kiigan

Post by Kiigan Thu Jul 08, 2021 2:41 am

Taking the shreds of the rather nice coat, visible relief eased Kiigan's features into warm neutrality, though the angles of his blue brows suggested that he would have been smiling if that was something his lips were capable of commonly doing. He had little reason to trust that Wes would keep the secret, yet he trusted the smaller man anyway. "Thanks," he said, a simple word for both the fabric and the vow of silence, but he continued to softly glow from positive emotions even as he turned his attention from the cute man with sealed lips to wrapping up his arm. Tying the shreds around the wound, he used his teeth and the fingers of his free hand to tighten a knot. Though it still didn't seem to bother him much, the size of the puddle accumulating under him was a good indicator that staunching the blood flow was in his best interest.

"...Sorry about your coat," he said after a moment, realizing what had truly just happened. His blood was quickly soaking the ruined cloth. Being a Gaiyan, he wasn't really that fussed with material things, though he did like Otherworlder clothes. While he might feel a twinge of sadness over a jacket he liked being lost or damaged, he knew the other races assigned even more worth to such things. The angel was also a little worried about another little aspect. How much did he owe Wes for it? Nothing outside Ilyanor was free. "I'll pay you back," he said earnestly, feeling like he'd said that to humans a lot lately. He also didn't actually have any vigs to give him, but maybe he could get an extension until he could get paid...

With a smidge of stress tugging his brows down, he wondered if he still got the job in light of the ruined jacket and all the blood he spilled. He wasn't sure what the criteria were for success, or really what the purpose was of what they were doing, to begin with. He might be decisive and independent, but he didn't ask many questions. He'd ask one now, though. "What's next, boss?" he asked, pressing into the makeshift bandage to try and stop the bleeding. He had to be strong to get this better job, right?

With eyes closed he only raised his finger at the angelman’s question in dejected silence, still mourning the loss of his favorite coat. The sight of it getting soiled with so much blood was maybe a bit too much for the short man who so lovingly holds his expensive clothes to heart. The only comforts he held in the act was the fact he could indeed get the piece replaced and, of course, the small but sincere gratitude that may or may not have livened his mood. Kiigan seemed content (or so he assumed by the lack of scowling and minute expressions), and he’d be lying if he didn’t admit that the curious glow did offer an extra sort of comfort.

“Well, firstly, don’t worry ‘bout the coat. Don’t think you want even more debt on your plate,” bending to grab hold of the suitcase, his brows would knit together at seeing the rapidly forming puddle, “‘less you don’t mind losing more vigs than you’re losing blood, then by all means go ahead.”

It didn’t seem like the bandage was doing much to staunch the blood flow, though any further thoughts on the matter were replaced as Wes made his way down the alley. The sound of bone breaking came to mind as he neared the large thug’s body, causing him to stop in wonder. Squatting down, he’d give Kiigan a quizzical look before returning his attention to the seemingly knocked out body. “Secondly…” Wes grabbed the man’s wrist, which fell limply moments later, “…we’re going to a club. Don’t know if your dancing’s as good as your fighting but–”

“Hell, you really gave it to him,” leaning in closer to inspect the thugs face, Wes’s own would scrunch up in disgust. He wasn’t quite sure if the guy was alive or not and, in the dark, it was relatively hard to make out any breathing. All he could see was a mess of oozing red. Whether the guy was alive or not wasn’t exactly a worrisome aspect for the ginger as he nonchalantly straightened himself into a stand, “Remind me not to get on your bad side,” he quipped, taking the moment to observe the blue-haired bouncer-turned-guard before offering up a shrug and going on his merry way.

Heading deeper into the alley, he’d round yet another corner moments later. A path that led to a metal door illuminated by very cheap lighting came into view, “As I was saying, we’re going to a club. Well, lemme rephrase that: I’m going to a club… sorta. The owner owes me a few stashes and because of that asked me to come play a few rounds of poker. As you can see, he’s not a very fair player,” he alluded to them being attacked, “I might have you sit out of it given your state,” he looked over his shoulder at Kiigan, looking for any input on the situation.

Back-Alley Business | Kiigan Empty Re: Back-Alley Business | Kiigan

Post by Kiigan Sun Jul 11, 2021 2:12 am

Oddly enough, despite the split second and confident decision he'd made to bash the guy's face in, the angel looked a bit uncomfortable once they paused by the thug. Kiigan couldn't hear much of what Wes said beyond not owing him for the coat, which was a relief he didn't get to enjoy. Teeth gently kneaded the inside flesh of his frowning bottom lip, and he glanced at his defeated foe for only a split second before his crimson hues briefly met Wes's quizzical stare and continued on to look anywhere but the body.

He didn't want to know the man's fate. As far as he knew, he'd never killed anyone (only threatened), but he also didn't stick around to really make sure. While the brawler was no stranger to violence, he was still a Gaiyan. That wasn't to say that Gaiyans never killed, but when they did, they were to have a very good reason, and he wasn't sure he had that. Protecting the boss, yeah, but one could protect without murdering. He didn't have the stomach for it yet, but he was putting up quite the tough front. He muttered something under his breath, a small prayer to guide the man's soul to the river of life, just in case... though surely it wasn't needed. Just knocked out with some broken bones. His guts could stop twisting now, thanks.

Back to being either unresponsive or offering only nodding acknowledgments, Kiigan was up to his own devices as he followed behind Wes. The makeshift bandage was only half doing its job since the fabric was fine and not specially made for moisture absorption. Pressing it was slowing the bleeding, but he was still leaving a trail. The angel wasn't in any danger, but as they reached the door and Wes explained the real situation-- he'd actually accepted that they were going dancing earlier so he felt a little dumb-- Kiigan jerked his head up to blink in surprise. "Uh, no, boss," he disagreed, eyes bright in... concern? Sure, initially he just wanted to get paid, but if this Poker Guy (what was poker??) would send enforcers that strong to take Wes out before a simple game, it was much more hazardous inside than it was in the alley on the way. Home turf advantage. Way more people.

Untying the shreds of coat, Kiigan rushed like a child about to be left behind at home during a day of fun. All he could think of was stopping the bleeding and cleaning up. Flames flickered over his suddenly glowing palm and he jammed it over the stab wound, cauterizing it closed and thus stopping the bleeding. Did it hurt? Absolutely. He pressed his lips and stifled a groan, but in the end, he hid his pain fairly well. He then re-tied some cleaner coat pieces over the ugly mark. That was one problem solved.

Presumably, the other problem was his lack of clothing. There was a fix. Calling on his Angelic Armaments, threads of light and fire rapidly crawled across his body and dressed him in skin-tight royal blue under armor accented in silver. He left off the armor at the shoulders to seem less aggressive. It was definitely in the average Vyldermirean style, but that's why he wasn't fond of it. He preferred the relaxed and casual Rivengate fashions over the stuffy old local clothes, let alone angelic armor, but it was what it was.

"Is this better? I think I really should go inside with you," Kiigan insisted. "Maybe all this," he gestured at his face, "will make them second guess messing with you?"

“No…?” he said pointedly, turning to face Kiigan. It was unusual when anyone went against his wishes, much less so when he’d allow the decision to go up in the air. A small bout of irritation crossed him. Was it annoyance at simply being disagreed with or that he had extended a caring hand and was denied of it, he wasn’t sure. Other members never went against the flow of his suggestions – much less when they found themselves wounded. It was safe to say the crime lord wasn’t accustomed to things like this.

Wes kept his mouth shut despite wanting to voice that the angel should indeed stay behind, but found his expression changing in light of the childlike enthusiasm shown by the other man. A dumbfounded look of sorts strained his features as Kiigan fixed himself up in mere seconds, and he found he had to respect the tolerance to pain. Again, the redhead couldn’t look away as yet another trick had been revealed to him at that moment. And, had he not been as bewildered as he was, maybe he would have counted himself lucky to have had the experience. Instead, he tentatively reached for the other man’s chest, his brows furrowed curiously as he ran his hand over the skintight material.

He snapped back to attention soon after, looking up at Kiigan who was pointing at his own face.

And so his hand balled into a fist.

“Whaddaya mean mess with me!?” the punch happened much too quickly, right between his shoulder and chest, as the irritation returned seconds after Kiigan had stopped talking. For someone who seemed as worried as Kiigan was at the aftermath of his own violence he sure had a strange way of coming around. And although the punch hadn’t been full force, he definitely intended for it to hurt. “I think I should be the least of your worries here. You could’ve done this the whole time!? Where you just planning on bleeding out all over the place or…? You could’ve– You could’ve done this to begin with! That’s so useful I–”

With a deep breath that led into an exasperated sigh he cut himself off and he pinched his temples in slight defeat. Decisive really wasn’t enough to properly describe the angel and his set of choices. Though Wes knew the act of cauterizing very much hurt, it sure beat waiting until the blood loss had him. He really had worried his newfound yet also renewed interest would’ve expired before the night was over.

“…I’ll have you know I can handle myself despite how I look,” he added in, though his tone softened into something of an annoyed mutter. Wes didn’t need anyone looking intimidating for him to be considered a threat himself. Maybe he had mistaken Kiigan’s original intention but, somehow, what he said had definitely hit a nerve.

Back-Alley Business | Kiigan Empty Re: Back-Alley Business | Kiigan

Post by Kiigan Mon Jul 12, 2021 1:32 pm

Ah, he'd upset the small man. The fact that part of it was from him disagreeing went over his towering blueberry head, but it was clear enough that the actions he took to get ready to go inside seemed to be the other part. The balled fist aimed into the corner of his chest thudded hollowly, and he responded with an "Ow" more out of reflex and acknowledgment than actual pain. "I coulda, but it hurts and the burn can get infected. I just have to cut it back open later, so I try to avoid it," Kiigan explained with a slight tilt of his head. Normally, if they weren't going into another dangerous situation so soon, he would've let the blood flow keep it clean and then clot on its own. He was a big guy. It took a long time for him to bleed enough to matter.

Though some of the intricacies of the situation were beyond his comprehension, the last part he understood. The light of macho understanding flashed in his eyes. He'd accidentally insulted Wes's ego and questioned his strength! As someone who had a decent ego and prided himself on his fighting skill, someone insisting on protecting him would probably rub him the wrong way, too. Kiigan wasn't the best at working with others anyway.

"Oh, I wasn't saying you couldn't, boss," the angel insisted, though he still felt he wasn't wrong even if he had thought it. Wes was a petite man with only daggers to defend himself as far as he knew, which he had assumed was the reason he hired Kiigan to come along. "But if you didn't need me to help fight off all of this poker guy's thugs, why did you bring a bodyguard?" Kiigan had been under the impression it was his abilities as a bouncer that had caught Wes's attention to offer more money to do the same for the casino and thus be brought along as what the Gaiyan assumed was a bodyguard. Why would someone so strong need someone like Kiigan on this particular night? Seemed too specific to be just a test.

"What if there are twenty guys in there with knives? Or worse, pistols?" he asked next, frowning deeply at the thought, especially at 'pistols' since he wasn't fond of the human weapon. Point was, it was unknown and dangerous, clearly Wes knew that.

One thing Wes might learn about his angel companion was that he was a bit stubborn and he wasn't afraid to question things, especially authority. He was still getting used to the human concept of authority, and even getting used to it didn't guarantee he'd give himself over to it. Even if he was told to wait outside, without a proper reason to do so-- like making sure no more bad guys entered in through the back-- he'd end up following Wes inside anyway.

What was this guy –a fucking brick? Dissatisfied didn’t begin to cover what he felt after having punched him. Wes wasn’t all too surprised all things considered, but the lack of any real response aside from that little ‘ow’ managed to irk him more than he already was. His eyes narrowed down on Kiigan, threatening to burn a hole where Wes had jammed his fist. He could take him. Yeah, he could. He’d taken on guys as big as him before. He just hadn’t used his full strength, that’s all!

“You’re really trying me right now,” stated the jaded redhead. The apparent concern coming from the man he had just attempted to relieve his anger on might as well had started to fall on deaf ears. As far as the mob boss figured, the bluette was still doubting his proficiency in the field. This wasn’t a first for him. His stature and overall appearance had always been subject to ridicule and criticism from others. He looked soft, they’d say; like someone who belonged in a more ordinary and less violent business. Hence, while the struggle to accept it had been done away with years ago, it was still a touchy matter. “It’s not like I haven’t been through worse,” he followed up matter-of-factly, arms crossed and nodding vehemently. “When you do what I do you pick up a few tricks here and there. So your boss will be just fine, thank you very much.”

“…’sides, I never said I didn’t need you,” he admitted, frowning all the while. Through all his bravado he wasn’t about to acknowledge that, yes, having a bodyguard did make things easier on him at the end of the day and that, yes, Kiigan was in the right of it when it came to the dangers that these kinds of things provided. His pride just wouldn’t allow him as much.

Wes also didn’t understand why the angel was fretting over the safety of one person he barely knew, much less one who had deliberately kept him in the dark the entirety of their journey. He could only guess, given everything thus far, as a few things came to mind. The most prominent one being, you guessed it: money.

“And if this is still about vigs, you ain’t gonna lose your paycheck for just waiting around,” his voice still held some bite to it despite the careless waving off while heading towards the door. The heavy metal creaked open and the fast-paced beats of otherworlder music echoed off the dark corridor beyond it. He stared at Kiigan expectantly, not giving any indicator as to what he should do. Though if Wes’s face was of any clue the implication in his words could be perceived as obvious.

Back-Alley Business | Kiigan Empty Re: Back-Alley Business | Kiigan

Post by Kiigan Sat Jul 17, 2021 1:38 am

Kiigan ended up here often He rubbed people wrong a lot, even though he was often in the dark on what he'd done to cause it. He blinked down at the testy red-head, his expression fully showing his displeasure and vague confusion, but his mouth didn't open again. Essentially, since he kept saying the wrong things, he clammed up. This was why he didn't talk much. The angel returned to nodding at Wes's confessions, blindly accepting them. He was right. He could take care of himself, his employee should just do what he was supposed to do. No need to angel it up, though even someone like Kiigan fell into the trap in his sub-species every now and then. Caring too much or being too helpful only brought trouble and complications. He was no hero. That was his parents' and brother's jobs.

He was just a hired fist.

The last assumption, though. That this was all still about vigs. His eyes tightened and his jaw flexed a clench, but he remained silent. Now he felt stupid for showing some sincerity, but he didn't contest it. This was how Kiigan was. If Wes wanted to believe he was only offering to put his safety on the line for someone because of payment, who was he to try and change his mind? Actually, that type of thinking helped him avoid being presumed to be a heroic type. And actions spoke louder than words, so if that's what his actions were saying, then no amount of blathering would make him look anything other than pathetic. Still, it didn't mean that it felt nice. He just wanted to do a good job for someone who was helping him out. What was it about him that always gave off the worst impression? Sometimes the world outside of Ilyanor was no different than the judgemental people back home.

Wes moved to the door and opened it, waiting expectantly, so Kiigan went ahead and walked through it to take the lead as any good bodyguard should.

It took a moment for his eyes to adjust. It was much darker than he anticipated, and the music was loud. There were glowing crystals in every color hanging everywhere, while brighter lights beamed through some to shine brilliant hues on decor and people alike. The floor to the left, beyond the bar in the middle, was pulsing with bodies seemingly entranced by the band at the back of the room. The music they played was strange to his ears, with the stand-up bass and large drum vibrating the air with a beat that nearly drowned out the vocals and other more melodic instruments. To the right was a calmer space, though it was sectioned off just beyond the bar by walls and thick curtains over doorways to give privacy. While he had no idea what the game of poker looked like, he was sure it needed the slightly quieter, more private rooms rather than the thronging crowd. Up a staircase that was also on the right, there was a balcony that crowned the whole room, offering more rooms and just general open space and seating for those who needed a break from the dancing below.

Since walking in hadn't resulted in a surprise attack, Kiigan quickly moved out of the way so his boss could take the lead again. He didn't know where to go or what to do, and he sure as heck wasn't making any more assumptions or offers. If his slightly more frosty demeanor and the frequency of cigarette puffs were any indications, he was nursing his temper but was at least exhibiting self-control.

The door shut a little harder than intended, the metallic clang echoing off the corridor walls. That glower had come about as an odd sort of surprise to Wes, and he’d watched as Kiigan made his way inside with some amount of contempt. Clearly, whatever was said moments ago had managed to bother his tall prospect. Maybe he’d pinned him wrong and the assumption that it had been all for the money had been off. Maybe there wasn’t an underlying reason for his apparent concern. Sometimes, sincerity was lost on the small man who’s been crossed one too many times in the past. He grumbled. For all he was concerned, Kiigan didn’t have to get like that over something so minor.

To no avail, he had tried to simmer down by lingering behind, so it took the redhead a few extra moments to catch up. The music was blasting as usual, the lights coming into view in a flourish. He reached for Kiigan then, vision still adjusting to the change in brightness, but only managed a weak tug and a “hey” before someone slapped Wes’s back so hard that he lurched forward. Whatever was going to be said died out before it even had the chance of surfacing.

“Savaglio, where you been!?” What looked to be the club’s bouncer manifested from somewhere near the ginger. The large, beaming smile he wore akin to an ever-growing smirk as he glanced down and then over at the less-than-content bodyguard. He didn’t allow for any answer, instead the man known as Reggie stopped before Kiigan, sizing him up in mocking judgement. “And who’s this!? New guy? He looks worse for we–” he yelped his loud mouth shut.

“Just tell us where to go, Reg,” not standing for the show of intimidation, Wes had twisted the smirking bouncer’s hand before it could connect for what seemed like a shove. Kiigan hadn’t gone unnoticed, and the last thing Wes wanted was for him to get angrier over yet another stupidity. At the very least, the pained reaction from the bouncer was satisfying and the ginger’s own annoyance waned marginally. A light grin played at his lips.

“What’s got you in a twist?” the bouncer quickly scoffed, glaring. He stepped aside with an indicating nod, “Up the stairs, center room. Boss should be there any moment.”

“Right,” though the redhead’s voice didn’t carry as deep nor loud as the bouncer, he could be heard over the blasting music. “You heard the man. Come on,” he’d address Kiigan before making his way through, every-so-often peeking back at the bodyguard whenever a waiter hosting free drinks or a rowdier than usual clubber got too close. He wasn’t exactly gouging what the bluette would do if anyone approached him, it was more seeing if he was still around. Getting side-tracked or lost in crowds was common, not that there’d be an issue if Wes lost sight of someone who stood out as much as him.

The second floor was mostly devoid of life. A few couches huddled around a coffee table in the side farthest from the stairs. A few people —couples and whatnot— loitered around the area smoking, drinking, and generally minding their own business. Once again, Wes opened the door and waited patiently. He’d follow Kiigan inside, if need be, though by the vaguely annoyed way he continued to stare it seemed like he had something to say.

Back-Alley Business | Kiigan Empty Re: Back-Alley Business | Kiigan

Post by Kiigan Wed Aug 11, 2021 4:56 am

It was a good thing that Wes intervened with the club owner when he did. Even in the best of spirits, he didn't respond well to being mocked or intimidated by overinflated buffoons, so his hackles were raising along with his fists when his boss diffused the bomb. A short sigh snorted from his nose as the angry kettle released a bit of the pressure, turning his glare from 'Reg' to the pulsating crowd of people instead.

When Wes prompted him to follow, the pair headed into the crowd. Kiigan stayed close, not wanting to lose the shorter man in the waves of people. Being taller than most of them, he could easily navigate. The ginger's glances back when unnoticed, since the bodyguard was more focused on making sure those that got too close and bumped them around were harmless club guests and not anything more sinister. He might be a bit miffed, but he still had a job to do and would stay focused on that. Maintaining impartiality was critical to a mercenary, and while he could do that most of the time, it was also the reason he was no longer an official mercenary. He may be quiet most of the time, but he had a hard time controlling his temper. He was doing better these days, though.

Up the stairs it was much less crowded, though it was hardly quieter until the balcony was left behind. Wes moved to a door and opened it once more, and yet again Kiigan entered first and had a quick look around. Empty except for a large round table haloed with chairs, some spare chairs against the walls covered in drapery, and the musty smell of said draperies that needed a good beating to rid them of years of dust and stale ale.

As the door closed behind and muffled the thumping live music below, the bluette turned to face Wes with his arms crossed. "Just because I'm quiet doesn't mean I'm not listening," Kiigan prompted, voice a bit tight but otherwise calm as he hoped to draw out whatever it was his prospective boss had dancing behind his lips prior to the meeting starting. He assumed it wasn't just more instructions, since Wes didn't seem the type to be holding those back for no reason. All of the irritable staring had to have a reason beyond pragmatism.

“Never said you weren’t,” he countered, peering up with a half-smile. He had gathered as much. As quiet as Kiigan was he had still heeded everything that was said up until now. So Wes found the statement amusing and a soft sort of chuckle could be heard as he sauntered his way over to one of the chairs. He wasn’t at all bothered by the room’s smell, having already paid the place more than a few good visits. Private rooms that didn’t smell like cigarettes, booze, or any other questionable substance, while preferred, were more or less a rarity among his peers. Disgusting.

Wes made a show of dusting off the chair before sitting and leaning back, legs resting atop the table crossed over another. The chair tilted on its hind legs, and he’d rock himself gently while cradling the suitcase his arms. The same bout of amusement carried over to his tone, “So what’s your deal? What did your lil’ ole boss say wrong?” It definitely hadn’t been the punch, that was for sure. And, while the more he thought about it the more he was sure it had been the assumption, it was still good to hear it with his own ears. Some basis of understanding was required, plus he wasn’t about to put up with an attitude the rest of the night — much less when they had to meet with guys that got their kicks off petty intimidation. The big guy had a temper, it seemed to him, and as short-fused as the crime boss himself could be he at least knew when to lay off. Though sometimes laying off proved a little harder than he’d like to admit.

The annoyance continued to subside. A part of him was genuinely curious and he’d blink his attention over to Kiigan after having spent the last few seconds staring at the cobweb-adorned ceiling with what could only be described as disinterest.

Back-Alley Business | Kiigan Empty Re: Back-Alley Business | Kiigan

His mouth might stay in a perpetual scowl and his words might be few, but the rest of him could be rather expressive. Even as he tried to seem like he was equally indifferent and unbothered, the covering up made his discomfort even more evident. Sanguine eyes peered around the room with deliberate slowness, and honestly, the room wasn't that interesting to earn such an examination.

Perhaps the silence that followed was a bit too long, but sometimes it took Kiigan a bit to formulate responses that were personal in nature. "You said what you were thinking given the information you have," he fielded, surprisingly indirect but truthful. Kiigan, of course, knew the assumption had been wrong and that's why he was miffed, but he was emotionally intelligent enough to know that it was also a logical conclusion, if not slightly jaded. He very much didn't want to correct Wes, but the way he'd asked made it hard to avoid without clamming up and making him mad. "I don't correct people when they make wrong assumptions about me," the bluette continued, fingers itching the corners of his cauterized flesh. "Either I'll prove it wrong or it won't matter anyway, y'know?"

It was much deeper than that, but it wasn't something he'd monologue about. Monologuing wasn't in someone like Kiigan, who often did his best to fly just under the radar. Neither was over-explaining unless he just couldn't get the words right. "If you decide to hire me, you'll find out if I'm just about the vigs or not."

That should do it, right? He didn't want to come right out and say that sometimes his angel nature got in the way and he really did take some actions for people even if they didn't line his pocket. Kiigan had his own sense of right and wrong, so if he felt it was right to protect someone, he'd do it. Sometimes he wished he could just be driven by money and do whatever. He'd have certainly paid off his debt by now.

Back-Alley Business | Kiigan Empty Re: Back-Alley Business | Kiigan

all these little lies

He hadn’t expected that. It was like Kiigan had been caught in a weird little trap of sorts. The answer had been around what he expected, though the way he worded it was far too logical for what had obviously been the redhead’s doing. It was a good answer, one that came with more insight than he thought.

Blue eyes shifted away from the clearly uncomfortable angel. At least now that he had cooled off he could accept it as it was and he felt he had half an image of what he had dragged along with him that night. He didn’t necessarily enjoy it, but he also couldn’t say he disliked it. Wes didn’t know much about angels aside from what he’d been forced to learn back home. He could only suppose, given Kiigan’s earlier explanation, they weren’t that much different here. Great. He hoped his bodyguard wasn’t too much of a bleeding heart when it came down to it.

“Guess I am finding out now, huh,” came the boss’s voice with a tilt of his head. It had taken him a few seconds to process, not that he was in any rush to do so at the moment. The guy had caught on that there was an ulterior motive as to why he’d been assigned to guard. Really, there was no use denying it. But Wes’s brain was basically hardwired to get around it. He scratched an invisible itch somewhere behind his shoulder — a bad habit from what a lot of people could consider a bad decision, “Can’t say I don’t take to the attitude, though — it’s kind of admirable. If not, a little…” he really didn’t want to say stupid. “…off kilter. No offense. God knows how many times that nice face of yours suffered.”

Really, somethings were easier explained away and avoided than waiting around until you could prove them wrong. There were options. There always were. For someone as small as himself words were the more convenient way of getting around most times, especially as he wasn’t much in the way of magic. So he tried his best not to compare and not to be too direct with his thoughts. He fixated on the wound now, distaste visible as Kiigan continued to fiddle with it, “Or am I wrong?”

Back-Alley Business | Kiigan Empty Re: Back-Alley Business | Kiigan

"Off kilter is the least of what I've been called while my face is sufferin'," Kiigan responded, a smidge of humor crinkling the corners of his Wes-casted eyes though it didn't seem to reach his mouth. Of course, Wes was right. Everything about the fedoraed man screamed worldly, even if he hadn't already watched damage being inflicted to his nice (hm, so he thought it was nice, huh?) face no more than a half hour ago. "I just find that people outside of Ilyanor put very little value on words when they aren't about them. Sayin' things about yourself is worthless, truth or lies, good or bad. They gotta see. And words do nothin' to guard gettin' punched in the face, though they're great for startin' the brawls."

Though the angel had been away from Ilyanor a little while now, there were still a lot of things about the non-Gaiyan world he didn't know. It was a deficiency he was made painfully aware of on the daily, a foe he battled every day to overcome. One thing he did know was most people were easy enough to offend by words, but trying to undo the offence with words didn't have the same weight. It was weird, but then again, Kiigan had never been good at conveying things aloud. Not even at home.

Oblivious to his prospective boss' disgruntled look at his wound, which he'd now picked at until it started to lightly bleed, once more his eyes gazed around the room. This time he was looking for more tactical information than things to keep from looking at the smaller red-head. One exit, which was the way they'd come in. He moved around and moved a few of the musty, crusty curtains around to see if any secret exits lay behind them. No such luck. Only one exit, which could be a two edged sword. It was good for escaping and blocking pursuers, but only if they got to it first. If it was blocked, they were as good as trapped.

Shifting gears back to the mission at hand, he concluded his exploration of the room and returned his fiery hues to the oceanic ones seated comfortably at the table. Kiigan wasn't one to really ask questions, but he wanted to be more sure of his role in this before whoever was coming came through the door. "What should I be expectin' to happen during this..." he trailed, tilting his head a bit in sudden confusion. He'd forgotten the word for what Wes said he'd be meeting the guy up here for. "...Boker? ...Joker?"

Neither of those sounded right, and it made him earnestly scowl.

His lips parted in protest. The bodyguard had picked underneath the cloth long enough and the distaste deepened all the more at the sight of blood. However, he found he couldn’t formulate the words, his mouth pressing together into a tight smile while his eyes flicked up to meet the bluette’s. “Right,” Wes nodded with a breathy, restrained sort of laugh, the humor mounting further due to his scowling companion’s demeanor. While Kiigan wasn’t necessarily wrong in his perception and Wes enjoyed the ‘do or don’t’ mentality, he withheld some gripes. And he wondered then, as he observed the guard inspect the dingy room, if the little secret he’d promised to keep earlier served to ease the tall one at all. Probably not, he figured. Yet he’d make sure to keep it under lock and key, especially in light of the man’s views. No one would know Kiigan Youngblood was a Gaiyan, much less an angel.

“Poker,” he corrected sharply, before Kiigan could continue to muddle up the name. “It’s called poker,” he repeated in a lighter, more considerate tone. The odd way the question was phrased caused some amount of pause within the redhead. He blinked, eyeing up the man curiously and not understanding why he found it so odd. Then it hit him. “Wait— You work at a casino —MY casino— and you’ve never heard of poker!?” Wes asked in disbelief, head thrown back as an honest-to-God laugh escaped him and he covered it with the back of his hand as to not come off as rude. “Just where did I go wrong?” he shook his head, snickering while playing up the last bit.

He patted an adjacent chair, careful not to tip himself over in his mirth. “Why don’t you sit down? And, no, don’t give me a ‘but’ or a ‘what if’,” he warned, a genuine smile complimenting the lightheartedness of his words. It seemed Kiigan continued to surprise his boss. For as attentive as the bodyguard was, Wes surely hadn’t expected this. “You already denied me once. So take a load off, alright? I’ll explain everything if you do.”
