Don't study me ; you won't graduate

Libraries—a building stocked full of literature and history preserved and frozen in time. That familiar scent of leather journals or that satisfying crack of opening a brand new hard-cover textbook was unmatched by anything else. They were man's greatest achievement right next to discovering fire, to some. After all, where would the world be without them? Without a place to store and share information about the past, the present, and what it may tell us about the future, how could people ever evolve and grow?

Many people wanted to be fantastic, grandiose things when they grew up, but Elias couldn't see himself being anywhere other than a library. The smell of books and the grand acoustics of a large, open room was the feeling of home to him—maybe too much so.

"Ah... this... this looks too heavy for me..." Elias thought aloud to himself as he stared down a crate of books, ominously staring at it on top of the reception desk with a look of uncertainty in his eyes. He was the only one in today, and their library was a small one. Obviously, being the capital, there was probably a bajillion other libraries larger and far wealthier than this one, but they managed to stay in business because of their niche selection of books that were hard to find. He was by himself, but that just meant he wouldn't have to leave today! Suddenly, he smiled softly, "I'll just take them out one by one, then."

Today was going to be a good day, he felt. There was a stormy overcast of clouds, with that familiar sweet scent of rain in the distance. The sun was just peeking out from the holes in the atmosphere, and it was just cool enough to wear a light jacket. It was all wet and gloomy today, but that was just how Elias liked it. He basically had the library to himself, and if he was lucky, he would have time to organize the back. As long as no one showed up, what could go wrong?

Someone would have to show up, of course. And it was no one in any type of normal situation.

People probably should have been more alarmed by the tattered young man they could glimpse running through the back alleys of Engloria, but most didn't talk about the things they saw anywhere off the pristine main pathways. He was panting as if he'd been running for miles, which was pretty accurate. It'd only been barely less than a day since he managed to get free from his masters. His feet were bare, bloody and bruised. The muted hair on his head, somewhere between a gray and a brown, was mussed from running and wet from rain and sweat. His skin was pale from most of his time being spent locked away from windows and doors. When he was allowed out, it wasn't for very long. His situation was illegal, after all, and 'nothing bad happened in New Dale'.

Coming to a dead-end in the dank back alley, he careened down a different one that unfortunately took him to a more populated area. Convinced he was being actively pursued, the boy wasted no time in the eyes of confused passersby. He flung open the door closest by, which just happened to be a library, and disppeared inside.

Though it was gloomy and overcast, it still took a moment for the widened amber eyes to adjust to the dimmer lighting inside. He glanced all around like an animal being hunted, desperately looking for a place to hide. If he saw the librarian, he didn't acknowledge him in the least. Dingy, ripped pants were all he wore, and they dripped all over the hardwood floors as the only indication of where he'd come from, which was the same direction as the coming storm. Water and books didn't really mix, but at the moment, the terrified man didn't give a crap. He was a survivor. An escapee. A fugitive.

A slave.

He darted forward suddenly, running further into the library and picking a darker back corner. Reaching for any books around, he started to build a wall around himself as if the texts were bricks, intending on blending into the piles and shelves as if he belonged.

Ding-ding!

The little bell hanging over the entrance doors to the library rang its light little sound, alerting Elias to someone's arrival. Their library usually quiet and it being a stormy day, Elias wasn't expecting customers at this hour and flinched when he heard the sound. He's been working here for a couple of years now, but he still couldn't get used to handling customers, and he loathed the sound of that bell. But as much as he loved being a librarian, it was still a job. And so, with a discouraged softness on his features, Elias turned around.

"H-Hi. How can I help yo—?!" Elias flinched back with an almost yelping sound as the customer he tried to greet sprinted past him in a flesh-colored blur, never saying hello or acknowledging Elias's existence at all.

For a socially awkward introvert like him, not having to talk to customers was great when they knew what they wanted or had an equal appreciation for solitude. But seeing this person sprint inside without so much as a word only terrified him.

"Wh-W-what...!" Elias sputtered as he slowly sunk to the ground, back against the desk as his skin paled. That person was definitely half-naked, right? And sprinting like that wasn't normal, right? Elias had seen all kinds of things since coming here, but this was definitely the first of its kind. More importantly... "Oh my God, oh my God... am I getting robbed? A-At a library?! This can't be happening... should I run? Maybe I should find someone! Oh God!"

Elias continued to mutter his panicked thoughts to himself for another minute, his body trembling as he mulled over his tricky situation. After the back and forth and the ups and downs of his mental state, a sliver of courage and realization finally twinkled in his eye, though it was pathetic in the face of his very obvious terror.

"G-Get it together! I... I have to protect this place!" Elias slapped his hands against his cheeks, trying to psyche himself up for confronting the robber. Even though his mind was vaguely set on this idea, his body was still pale and trembling as he tried to get himself up from the desk. His dark, black eyes looked over at the broom with interest, and he swallowed hard. "O...Okay!"

* * *

Tap... tap... tap...

Slowly making his way through the dimly lit corridors of bookshelves and tables, Elias managed to get on his feet, this time wielding a particularly aged broom. Even though the broom was intended as a weapon, the way he hugged it so close to his chest made it obvious that it was some sort of coping object more than anything. He trembled with every step, and every time he peeked around the corners and the halls was like staring in the face of the abyss itself. It was cool inside the library, his face was practically caked in sweat.

"H-Helloooo...?" Elias anxiously called out into the room, hearing his voice bounce off the walls and no reply find its way to his ears. The silence was almost more terrifying than the fact that he knew someone was in the library, and that he couldn't find them even though he was certain they ran in here! He checked all of the halls and corners of the place before he arrived at the last turn, but this time, he could hear the shuffling of books. There was no doubt about it—the robber was on the other side of this shelf!

It all went so smoothly in his head—he'd find the robber, beat them with his "weapon", and call the authorities to have them sent to jail! But as he approached the corner, Elias could already taste the vomit in his throat and his heart beating out of his chest.

"...Ohmygodohmygodohmygod!..." Elias whispered, slowly extending the broom from his chest and shaking violently. His mind was beginning to go blank, and it was getting to a point where he was sure he'd black out before he even got a chance to see the robber! The taste of acid in his mouth and his rear feeling the threat of his bowels at max, Elias sucked whatever he could up and made a violent and abrupt twist around the corner. "Die, die, die, die, dieeee!Oof!"

To his surprise, books were littering the floor, and his clumsy foot had found itself right on a scroll. He lost his balance almost instantly and fell head-first onto the ground. The broom continued to fall straight and jabbed him right in the gut, sending a rush of discomfort and pain as if a hole was carved into Elias's stomach. He had just made a complete fool of himself right before his murderer.

"Ooohhhh my Goooood...." he groaned painfully, hugging his stomach with one arm and holding himself up with the other. Blood dripped down from his nose and onto the scroll beneath him, too. Needless to say, he started to cry as well. He really did it now, huh? This really, really, really sucked!

In a painful, crying mess, Elias sniffled the snot from his nose before slowly looking up at the robber in the corner, ready to beg for mercy.

"I'm so sorry, I..." Elias started to apologize for no particular reason when he finally made eye contact with... a half-naked kistune? Or maybe it was a neko. Either way, they were clearly boxing themselves in with books, and whether that made the whole encounter more or less threatening didn't show on his face. Instead, the pale, skinny inbucus was just left severely perplexed. "U-Uhm..."

What should he be saying right now?

He'd made his little book fort about waist high and was crouching in it by the time he heard a very frightening 'die!' chant as the Eldritch made it to him with the broom. No! His camouflaged hiding spot wasn't finished! Broken down and tired, he pressed himself back against the wall and tried to become as small as possible even though he was cornered.

Was this man sent by his owners to capture him? Kill him? If his vocal cords hadn't been unused for so long, he might have been whimpering. Instead, his terror was coming out in trembling sighs as his hands reached up, pinning his Neko ears down as flat as possible, as if that would help anything. Even if this guy wasn't hunting him, many Eldritch still held Anthros in very low, mostly hostile esteem. He truly expected the worst, which would be getting hog-tied and taken back to his prison. Death, though scary, would be a mercy.

After cowering that way for a long enough to notice the scent of tears and blood, the young man peeked an eye open. Incredulous, the disheveled escapee leaned forward, his eyes peeking just above the top layer of books while he still held down his ears. Was this guy...apologizing?  Slitted pupils peered at the book-loving demonata, taking in the unexpected sight and making eye contact. This guy...was a mess. But did that mean he was harmless?

More of the intruder's head rose up from the books, his dirty face cautious but curious. Very slowly, his arms lowered from his ears-- which popped up and twitched-- and reached in a sloth-like way over his barrier. With the lack of attack, suddenly his motions turned frenzied, snatching books like crazy to continue erecting his cubical of books, occasionally pressing a finger to his lips to silently beg the librarian to stay quiet.

To Elias's surprise, it seemed that both he and the intruder were equally frightened of each other, though the mild-mannered demonata didn't realize it until they both finally made eye contact. It was a half-naked anthros with a dirty face and eyes gleaming with caution and distrust, like a scared stray. He wasn't thinking clearly before (and still isn't), but he may have been right to assume it was a neko. Their features were so distinct that you could spot one amongst any crowd. Not only that, but he heard that their ears could be quite soft and smooth to the touch. But regardless of his race, it didn't change the fact that he had barged into the place without any explanation. So, puzzled and anxious, Elias looked up at him with an uncertain gaze.

"S-So... who—" Elias began again, but was cut short by the neko's sudden movement. He flinched as if he were bracing for an attack, but instead got to see the boy resume what he was doing before—constructing a book fort, this time insisting that Elias keep quiet with a shushing gesture. Even though now it was somewhat clear that the neko wasn't going to attack him, the situation became even more confusing. Who was this guy and why was he building a fort in his library? Why was he telling him to shush? Where did he think he was going dressed like that?

If not for his horrible curiosity and confusion, Elias probably would've done as he was told and remained as silent as a mouse, but his want for answers trampled over his instincts.

"W-Who are you and why have you come here?!" Elias sputtered again, smudging away the blood from his nose and rising onto his shaky knees while hugging the broom. From the looks of it, it seemed like the neko boy had no interest in robbing the place or burning books or whatever it is that people do when they break into libraries, but it didn't explain the frantic fort-building either.

It was then that he heard the distant but familiar Ding-Ding! of the doorbell at the reception area, alerting them both to the presence of another. The sound made Elias flinch and look the other way, fear in his eyes. Just when things couldn't get worse, someone else decided to show up? What was he supposed to do? After all, he kind of had his hands tied right now, and if he said anything now, he had no idea what this neko would do to him. Nervously, he looked back at the neko to see his reaction to the sound, or any reaction at all.

The Neko still didn't respond. The book walls were now just over his head and he was running out of books inside the fort to go taller, but he was dead set on using every last book for maximum height. It stressed him out that the man with the purple markings on his face was still lingering and trying to speak to him, but perhaps if it looked like no one was there, eventually he'd give up and leave him be. He could only hope. Otherwise, he was prepared to start chucking books at the man who had yet to attack him.

There were a few books to go when he heard the bell up front and froze. Another person. The smell of wet dirt and moisture. Someone from the stormy direction. His heart sank, then started pounding. Had they found him already? It wasn't as if he knew how to cover his tracks. After a moment of tense motionless and more silence, there was the smallest of rustlings, then a book about eye level moved in the wall. Eyes peeked through the dark hole first to make sure the librarian was still there, then he tossed out a crumpled piece of paper and replaced the book, once more obscuring him from sight.

'Hiding. Please get rid of new person.'

It was quickly scrawled, though it did give the impression that whoever wrote it would have otherwise had elegant handwriting and likely a more eloquent command of the language given more time and less terror. He prayed to every god he could remember that the librarian would have mercy on him, based only on the fact that he hadn't attacked him yet. So much planning and bravery had gone into this escape, it was too soon to have it end.

Of course, both of Elias's questions were completely ignored at the neko made the finishing touches on his book-fort. What started off as a messy but not unnatural corner of the library ended up looking completely out of place, almost standing out more than anything else nearby. After being blatantly ignored, Elias was beginning to muster up the courage to ask him once more before the neko chucked a piece of paper at him with writing scribbled all over it. Needless to say, he had a message.

"Hiding? Please get rid... of new person..." the nervous demonata repeated, looking up at the neko for some sort of further explanation, but only being greeted by a barrier of books. Well, maybe asking for details right now wouldn't yield answers, but the paper told him that although this neko was an intruder, he wasn't a robber. His scribbling was rushed, but even under his mysterious circumstances, he took the time to write 'please'.

What was he hiding from, and why? Where were his clothes and why did he look so dirty? More than anything, why did he think that a such a neatly constructed book-fort would do something? So many questions and so little time to answer them, but if Elias didn't leave for the reception desk now, who knows what the neko would do to him if the customers found him like this?

Without a word, Elias held on tightly to his broom and ran for the front, nearly crashing into the people waiting for him at the desk.  He came to an abrupt stop and looked up at the man who towered over him. It was a bald guy with a square face and bullet holes for eyes, and a much shorter, scrawnier man hovering behind him with his thin hair balding prematurely. They totally looked like thugs, and Elias turned pale accordingly.

"H-He-Hello! W...What can I... what can I do for you two?" Elias anxiously fumbled over his words, his lips wearing a strained, pressured smile as he looked up at the man while embracing his broom.

"Yo. Have you seen a male Neko come through here?" the bald man looked down, his brow so thick and bony that it almost cast a shadow over his eyes. He looked at Elias's strange injury with mild interest, to which Elias noticed and immediately wiped away whatever was left. Thoughtfully, he raised his hand up, "'Bout this tall? Pale brown hair? Kinda has a good face?"

"I... uhm..." Elias looked away from him, shrinking in his oppressing stare. These must be the guys the neko was hiding from. They certainly didn't seem nice, or seemed to have good intentions. The vibes he was picking up from these guys were far worse than the initial shock of what happened earlier, but he also had no idea what was going on. It was none of his business, and the neko gave him more trouble than anything by being here, but even so, he just said the first thing that came to his mind when the question surfaced.  "...no. It's just me here... in the library. I-If you'd like, I could help you find a book or—"

"No need," the butch man cut Elias short, beginning to turn away while peering into the dimly lit library ahead of him. Pausing, he stopped, "Actually, I've been meaning to find a good read. Mind if I take a look?"

* * *

Fwoop! Fwoop! Thoomp!

"S-Sir... please..."

"I ain't done lookin' just yet."

These guys were definitely thugs. If by 'take a look', the guy meant rummaging through shelves and shelves of books and scrolls and carelessly letting them fall to the floor, he was set on finding that perfect read. Aisle after aisle of knowledge littered the floor, and Elias couldn't say or do anything but watch with visible discomfort and irritation as it all unfolded. Normally, he'd draw a line when it came to the books, but his situation was so precarious that he feared losing his tongue if he spoke out against them.

It finally came to a point where they arrived at the aisle with the book-fort, and the neko did himself no favors by constructing such a penetrable, out-of-place fortress. While the butch man was still rudely rummaging through other aisles, the scrawny man instantly took notice of the fort. Squinting, he walked closer and closer to it, extending his hand out to remove a book.

"A-Ah, no no! Sir, please don't touch that! That's... those are currently not available right now, so...!" Elias pleaded, fidgeting wildly as the scrawny man continued to walk over anyway. Now that he was covering for this stranger, there was no telling what would happen to him if they caught him in his lie. His heart was threatening to leap out of his chest with every footstep. "Please...!"

Fwoomp!

"Man, let's dip!" the butch man called out from the other side of the room, the sound of a book clapping together bouncing off the walls, and then footsteps toward the door, "He ain't here, and all this dust is makin' my eyes itch like crazy."

The skinny, balding man was no more than an foot away from touching the barrier of books before his colleague summoned him, making him freeze in place with this look of frustration and suspicion on his face.

"But—" he tried to explain, but his thuggish friend interrupted him.

"Come. On!"

"Hm," he gave the books and Elias one final glare before pocketing his hands and waddling out of the library, the familiar ding-ding! finally leaving the demonata and anthros in solitude.

* * *

After quickly locking the doors and pulling the blinds down the windows, Elias returned to the neko's corner of the library with a weary and drained expression. His heart ached as he stepped over the dozens of books and scrolls left on the ground before he made his way back to the neko, never abandoning his broom as he stood a comfortable distance away from the fort. Even though the thugs were gone, he was only left to deal with... whatever and whoever this was, and the mess they caused.

The initial wave of terror had passed, and Elias could only release the most exhausting and relieved sigh by the end of it all, and all he could feel was immense regret.

"I can't believe I just did that..." he mumbled to himself, a gloom coming over him as he mulled over what just happened. After a moment of regretablly recollecting his thoughts, he looked at the fort apprehensively, "Uhm... they've left, so... well... can we talk now?"

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) Empty Re: Naked & Afraid (Adrisse)

Post by Ashelyn Tue Jul 13, 2021 6:33 am

There was a long, uncomfortable silence before there was a soft sniffle from behind the hollow pillar of books. Oh, he'd been so scared. Those were definitely guys hunting him, and they'd been so, so close. Mere feet away. It was all he could do to breathe he was trying to be so quiet, but now that they appeared to be gone, the tears wouldn't stop rolling down his grimy cheeks. It was a discordant symphony of emotions like fear, relief, and exhaustion that caused him to weep without a single vocal noise, and once the frantic sniffling slowed to a more manageable level, there were signs of movement from within.

First, he took out the same book he'd remove to throw the note out. Watery eyes peered at the potential ally with consideration, though he was still very cautious. He then took a glance around to make triple sure the thugs weren't just pretending to be gone, but he didn't see or smell them anymore. Moving away from the hole but not replacing the book, he meticulously deconstructed his unnatural camouflage, taking care to neatly stack them on the floor in equal heights. It was awkward and took time, but it was his appreciation for the books that kept him from busting out of the cubical like a raging bull. The thugs might have abused the scrolls and texts, but the Neko wasn't anything like them.

Once he was finished, he stood before the demonata unobscured. They were about the same height, and though the Neko was dirty and nearly naked, he wasn't too skinny. Though a lot had been lacking in his care, he'd actually been quite clean and well-fed to suit his master's aesthetic tastes previous to running. Running for so long in the wilderness and storm had covered him in dirty and mud and marred patches of creamy complexion with bruises and scrapes, though hints of violence remained as pale scars upon close inspection.

The librarians calmer demeanor was mirrored in the intruder, though a stray tear crept from his eye to run down the clean tracks on his cheeks. He simply looked at the man for a long moment before he opened a small book that was wet and damaged around the edges. A fountain pen was stuck in the spine, which he removed to write something. Even though his hands still shook and he glanced up and around every few seconds, he managed a better-written note. He then held out the whole notebook to the man with the broom.

'If I can trust you, we can talk. My name is Adrisse. Did you lock the door?'

Even though those thugs were gone, there was still this heavy silence and even heavier suspense that stood between Elias and the mysterious neko boy. With those men gone and the two of them truly alone, how would they turn out? Elias wasn't really sure what to think as he awkwardly watched the stranger carefully deconstruct his fort and stack the books in neat, organized piles, until the barrier no longer obscured them both from each other. Without anyone looming over them, they could finally see each other in full view.

The neko boy was undoubtedly dirty and greasy like a stray, but looked too well-fed to be one. It wasn't too farfetched to say that he was fit, really. His hair was just as the thugs described—something of a muted brown color—and his glossy, wet eyes reminded him of honey. But more than his pretty features, Elias's gaze eventually fixed on one curious item around the boy's neck—a collar. Like a  tragic little bow on the package, he noticed a stray tear run down the neko's face, and almost immediately he could tell what might be happening here. Or, so he thought.

The truth was that all the collar and the tear did for him was dispell his feeling of danger and replace it with an depressing slap of reality. His library was a mess, he lied to some dangerous-looking guys about what looked to be a fugitive, and most importantly, the fugitive was still here.

Elias's face grew gloomier and gloomier as it all hit him, mulling over the whole situation as he apprehensively awaited the neko's reply. They stared at each other for a long moment, Elias fidgeting under the pressure of this neko's slitted, prying eyes before he did something... odd. Suddenly, he pulled out a weathered notebook and began writing in it again. After a few moments of anxious scribbles, the neko held out the whole notebook for Elias to view. To his surprise, he was trying to talk to him again in written form.

"Oh... y-yes. Those men just left, and I closed the blinds too, so..." Elias looked down a bit, trying not to sigh as he thought about the books. How could someone so easily trample over something so precious? Having to clean up after such bullies was exhausting enough, but it was even worse that he had even let it get to that point. In a sense, he was just as trampled on as those books, and he just let it happen. His spirits began to sink a bit before he caught a glimpse at the neko's neat stack in the corner of his eye again. He took his time with that.

Anxious and in awe, Elias tried looking back up at the neko again, but his nerves got the best of him and he ended up not making eye contact. Instead, he setttled for looking at his feet.

"...W-Who are you?"

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) Empty Re: Naked & Afraid (Adrisse)

Post by Ashelyn Wed Jul 14, 2021 11:20 am

Watching him with wary curiosity, Adrisse nodded in relief that the place was now secure, but couldn't help but notice that the countenance of this man was not what he expected from an Eldritch. He knew he hadn't exactly had run-ins with the cream of the crop of the Outer Realm race, but the whole vibe of what he'd assumed was a demonata seemed off. He was timid, avoided eye contact, and seemed unsure of his words. Had he been mistaken? Was this just a human playing dress-up? Perhaps those markings were theater makeup. While it was a flash of fun to consider the theater, now was not the time to be caught up in his love of drama.

Pulling the notebook back, Adrisse again wrote in it. The more he wrote, the calmer he seemed to become. With that calmness came a neatness to his handwriting, easily legible and beautiful like someone who had done nothing but practice his script for a very long time.

"I'm nothing more than a slave. I escaped, but people don't like losing their possessions, so people are out trying to find me to take me back or maybe even kill me. Thank you for hiding me. I will help you clean up."

He stepped very slightly closer so he could slide the rugged book back under his potential savior's downturned face. If he'd missed his name before, it'd still be clearly written in the statement above, so he only clarified the obvious. He'd watched how the man's eyes lingered on his collar. The implications were probably pretty clear, but one could never be too sure.

After holding it there long enough that he was sure it'd been read, he pulled it back once more as he thought of something else. Just a pleasantry, but important all the same. In the life Adrisse had lived, names and identities had become important anchors to keep pets and slaves from losing themselves and their dreams of freedom.

"What's your name?"

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) AOVzqeE

Don't study me ; you won't graduate

Reading what was written, Elias wasn't super surprised to find that this Adrisse character was a slave. Property on the loose, so to speak. And while it was terrible to rob a creature of its personal freedoms, that reality was that it wasn't uncommon for anthros to be on the receiving end of it. Some found satisfaction in making them the pets they so closely resembled, or perhaps pleasure in tormenting them through other ways. Many just settled for their circumstances and grew content with the fact that their quality of life was designed to be worse than everyone else's. Even Elias didn't think much of it, but he couldn't ignore this strange feeling in his chest when he saw the boy standing before him.

Even as Adrisse explained his situation, he did it all with the elegance and scribble of a pen on paper. Not a word had come out of his mouth since he barged into the library, and even with those thugs gone, he still wrote his thoughts down rather than spoke them. Was he mute? Or maybe just wary about anyone listening? Whichever the case, maybe Elias was lucky that the intruder was at least polite and tidy, but that didn't change the fact about how worrying his new situation was. All that was left was the single question—what now?

"Oh!" he perked up as the notebook was reeled back in to scribble in before Adrisse held it out again, this time with a new question. At first, Elias was so distracted by his own thoughts that he didn't realize what the question was asking until a few moments of looking at it, lost. After he realized what it was, his cheeks pinked slightly as he briefly looked at Adrisse. "E-Elias. I'm the librarian here—well, actually, not the librarian—but—you know, I work here? The librarian is out now, so I'm... yeah...

So there they were, a soft-spoken demonata and a runaway neko exchanging names and mulling over their new circumstances while surrounded by the familiar smell of leather and paper. Both of them were probably thinking about where to go from here, or maybe it was just Elias. Adrisse was probably relieved to have found some sort of "safe space" since coming from wherever he came from, but Elias couldn't have been more at odds with the whole dilemma.

Now that he lied to those men's faces, he had somehow wiggled his way into something he probably shouldn't have. It'd be easier to just kick the neko out and call someone to pick him up—after all, it wasn't any of Elias's business anyway, and he shouldn't have cared what happened to him either. But wasn't that too cruel? Whether it was out of pity or out of his own kindness, Elias found relinquishing Adrisse back from whatever hellhole he came from far more uncomfortable than the thought of him being here at all.

After a defeated sigh, Elias finally broke into a small, cordial smile, still hugging his broom as he looked at Adrisse. He didn't know what other looks Eldritch had given him before this, but those deep, black eyes of his were warm and comforting.

"Are you hungry?" was all he asked, and even though it may have been an act of pity, maybe pity was a type of kindness in itself.

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) Empty Re: Naked & Afraid (Adrisse)

Post by Ashelyn Thu Jul 15, 2021 8:53 am

Adrisse had a name to put to the soft man across from him. Elias. The fugitive's mouth turned up slightly at the corners and he nodded a form of official greeting. It was a nice name for a potentially nice man, though it was understandable that he was slow to trust. The Neko might not be terribly bright, but he'd been through enough crap to know better than to just accept a few minutes of behavior as the sum of a person. Especially when it came to humans and eldritch. They weren't always what they seemed, and more of them than Adrisse liked admitting had no problem with owning another person simply because they shared a couple of aesthetic traits with the family pet. He'd met more bad than good, to put it lightly.

The comments about the actual librarian being out for now bothered the paranoid anthro. Fear flashed onto his face and he frowned. How long would they be gone? Would they be back today? Adding any more people to this stressful soup seemed like trying his luck a little too much for today. He began writing in his notebook again to ask when Elias expected the librarian back, but he was soon distracted.

The mention of food. His ears stood alert and twitching in interest and his cat eyes quickly rose and stared with widened lids. He hadn't had a chance to eat since he ran away, and the master had deprived him of food the day before because he found his stash of poetry romanticizing running away. It was probably a ploy to make him second guess such a thing, or leave him too hungry to act on it. Either way, it hadn't worked, but Adrisse was certainly starved after all the frantic running. He nodded enthusiastically, instinctively licking his dry lips. Pity or not, he didn't care at all. Food was food.

Still, he was hypervigilant. After the initial perk up to the offer of food, he sobered a bit and finished writing his next note.

"When will the librarian be back? Do we have time to straighten what those jerks knocked over?"

Yes, Adrisse had noticed that the library was more disheveled now than when he'd come in, and it wasn't from his book fort. Hunger and fear couldn't quite knock down his love for the written word, so he wouldn't feel right until they'd put it back in order. Once he was sure Elias had had time to read his words, he slowly moved off to the side so he could pick up a book and a scroll and place them back on the shelf nearby. There was a gentle fondness in his eyes as looked at them, taking particular note of the titles and the feel of the leather. Books had been his only company for a very long time.

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) AOVzqeE

Don't study me ; you won't graduate

Seeing those distinct ears of his perk up and those pretty honeyed eyes widen at the offer of food was mildly amusing to the soft-spoken demonata, and a little cute. It was a strange thought to have, but he could at least see why people enslaved anthros—not that Elias endorsed or enjoyed the thought. But of course, the food wasn't the only thing that caught Adrisse's attention. When writing, the only thing he seemed to want to talk about was Elias's brief mention of the librarian who owned this building.

"Uhm... it'll be three days before she gets back? She and her husband are on their honeymoon, you see. I've only met the man once, but he seemed very well-mannered, and—" Elias paused as he caught himself in his rambling again. Aside from the librarian he worked with, he didn't get to talk to many people. His nerves would get the best of him and he'd always look like a mumbling, bumbling idiot when he talked to people. He stopped himself before smiling softly once more, "...Anyway. Wait here, won't you?"

* * *

A few minutes passed before the mild-mannered demonata returned from the depths which he stepped into moments before, this time with a plate of bread, fruit, cookies, and black coffee. As an incubus, the only sort of sustenance he actually needed was the energy he gained from sleeping with others, so eating and drinking other things was for pleasure and delight alone. Yet, even though he didn't actually need to consume foodstuff, he did have a taste for certain things over others—oftentimes on the bitter side.

"Sorry, I don't eat very many sweet things, so the coffee's black and cookies aren't very sweet. Oh, I didn't even ask if you drank coffee... shoot," Elias continued to explain in a quiet, low voice as he dragged a small table on wheels behind him, placing the platter on top and scooting it over to Adrisse. Then, keeping a comfortable amount of distance between him and the anthros, he sat down on the ground, hugging his knees as he tried to keep him company. "Uhm... as for earlier, you don't have to worry about it. Those guys were real jerks to mess everything up like that, but I had them all organized a specific way, and making you put them back may just mess it up even more."

For a brief moment, Elias realized how picky (or even rude) he sounded, and suddenly he felt a wave of guilt wash over him. He didn't say anything for a few moments before he began to twiddle his thumbs and apprehensively glance over at Adrisse's feet. Again, he noticed the books and how he held them.

"Do you... like to read? And write, perhaps?"

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) Empty Re: Naked & Afraid (Adrisse)

Post by Ashelyn Fri Jul 16, 2021 8:20 am

Adrisse waited awkwardly as the man disappeared, comforted that the owner of the place wouldn't be returning to cause him any trouble. He was cold though. Standing in little more than the equivalent of wet boxer shorts, he'd busied himself with picking up scrolls and books and looking through them before gently placing them on the shelves where he thought they might have been pulled from. Oddly enough, though the timing was way off and he knew it, he missed his books. His collection wasn't huge, but it was basically all he had to his name. The home he was kept in had a library, and when he behaved he was allowed some time in there to read. He'd probably read every book, scroll, and scrap of poetry in there. When he wasn't nose-deep in a book, he was writing his own.

He paused what he was doing when Elias returned with a cart, and again his eyes lit up and his ears angled forward. Before the man could even explain what was offered, his nose sniffed the air and he discovered the coffee. When his host did speak, he waved off the concern with an eager smile. Black coffee was fine. All of it was fine. He didn't really have a preference for foods anymore, since it was demanded he eat whatever he was given. Once you choked down even your least favorite foods either forcibly or for survival for so long, taste didn't matter anymore. He was about to descend upon the platter pushed close to him when Elias spoke again.

Probably not helping with the passive Eldritch's guilt, the comment about him messing up the organization even more caused his face to visibly fall. Pouting. He was pouting and making no mystery of it. Turning back toward the shelf, he picked up all the scrolls and books he'd tried to put back correctly and stacked them neatly on the floor instead, much as he had with the books he'd used in his fort.

Now that he'd undone his unhelpful action, he grabbed a cup of coffee and the platter and sat on the floor as well. In the silence, Adrisse ate as slowly as he could manage so he wouldn't seem like a wild animal, but there was an urgency to it that kept him from eating it normally. He was starving. He also didn't know when his next meal would come, or how long he'd get to rest. The anthro seemed content in the quiet, almost ignoring the other man while his eyes rested on the bread he ripped pieces from. The coffee he washed it down with was warm in his chilled, nervous belly.

When the demonata spoke again, he glanced at him quickly, as if deciding if he wanted to answer or not. Adrisse could be petty and dramatic, but he was generally quick to move on. This man had shown him kindness so far, and while he didn't trust him and was basically waiting for the other shoe to drop, he also didn't want to be ungrateful.

Perhaps he hadn't learned his lesson. The last time someone had been like Elias, he'd been sold and treated like an actual cat for two years.

Scooting just close enough to be able to reach his notebook to the man, the Neko sat his snacks aside and wrote his answer.

"I love to read and write. It's beautiful how everything a person is can be poured out as ink onto paper as material proof that not only do they exist, but their feelings are real and their thoughts have substance. It can be art, information, or entertainment. For some people, it's the only world beyond four walls to explore. I assume you must feel similarly to want to work here?"

As he slid his words over, the young man couldn't help but feel a little jealous. This was basically a dream job for him. To have independence, money, and access to endless amounts of books? Perfect. It was peaceful. It was freedom. He almost started crying again.

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) AOVzqeE

Don't study me ; you won't graduate

When Adrisse offered the notebook yet again for Elias to read, the mild-mannered demonata was thrown for a loop. Finding out that this Neko not only likes to read and write, but held a deeper appreciation for it was enough for Elias to briefly break out of his shell and want to talk about the unlikely thing they had in common. It wasn't so often that he'd find people whose appreciation for the work possessed such depth, and less likely that they'd be some fugitive who barged in uninvited, but his heart leaped with delight when it was the case. However, the elegance of the handwriting and the length of his response were almost as if Adrisse were completely relying on written word to converse at all. Now that he had not only evaded his pursuers, but found enough security in sitting down to eat surely meant it was at least somewhat safe to talk in the moment, and yet he still chose to write it down?

Needless to say, Elias was thrown between a sea of emotion, split between bewilderment, curiosity, and joy.

"R-Right?! Books are more than just ink on paper! It's sharing the most private part of your very soul and giving it shape. It has the ability to take you to different dimensions and universes, make information immortal just by putting it on paper! Without it, who knows where we would be? I've personally...!" Elias paused abruptly. For a moment, he seemed caught in his excitement to have finally found someone who just 'gets it', but it was no sooner than he'd realized how much he was running his mouth, rambling. With that in mind, his overjoyed blush died down to a more embarrassed one, sheepish in his gestures as he almost made himself smaller hugging his knees, looking down at his toes. "...But yes, working in a library does have its benefits if you l-like to read and write, and uhm..."

It wasn't super obvious, but as Elias trailed off again, he was dying to ask about the notebook and their inability to have a normal conversation. He kept glancing at the notebook without having finished his thought, twiddling his thumbs as he awkwardly listened to his guest munch away at the snacks he gathered. Maybe this wouldn't be so awkward if he were eating something too? Goodness, he was too nervous to eat anyway! Anything he'd stuff down would just come right back up.

How should he ask? Should he ask at all? Did he get too happy about the question? Elias kept his mind busy and saturated with worry as he exhausted himself, brooding over what just happened.

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) Empty Re: Naked & Afraid (Adrisse)

Post by Ashelyn Tue Jul 20, 2021 10:38 am

Adrisse was riding Elias's excitement as if it were an ocean wave. He angled more toward the man as he spoke so energetically, straightening his back and leaning in the Eldritch's direction while he nodded with more and more enthusiasm. The Neko was just about to clap when the man abruptly stopped and retreated. Eyes wide and blinking, he tried to process this sudden change, then furrowed his brows and made circular 'go on!' hand motions to try and encourage his timid savior into continuing his rousing speech about the thing they both loved, but it was for naught. Elias left him hanging. All the exuberance had died and the demonata became even smaller. Though it was hypocritical given his mute-ness, Adrisse found it a shame that he was being held back from expressing himself for some reason. Despite his lack of vocalization, Adrisse never withheld any other form of expression, even when it was nearly beaten out of him.

What he was expressing right now was mild disappointment at the flattening of their conversation, given his frown and puckered brows. However, his mouth retained a bit of the smile that had been growing, knowing there was a lot of love for literature lurking in this stuttering man. He also noticed the repeated glances at his notebook, and in the middle of popping grapes into his mouth with alarming frequency, it dawned on him why. The realization hit him with such force that he nearly choked on one of the delightfully tart berries. Of course, he made a rather dramatic show of hacking it out of his throat with flailing arms, but he was actually fine. He grabbed his book and started scribbling again.

It was probably odd to people outside of his previously very limited group of people to encounter someone who didn't speak. While his vocal cords were no longer damaged, the trauma of the incident and his enslaved circumstances had stolen his will to make that kind of noise anymore. It was a defense mechanism or something. He wasn't actually sure if they worked or not, but he had no desire to find out. Being silent cut down his troubles by a lot, and the mere thought of saying something made him, normally a very confident soul, as nervous as Elias. Adrisse really didn't want to throw up his snacks.

"I know it's strange that I don't speak. I'm basically mute. This book, my face, and my body are the only ways I can communicate. It's awkward and I'm sorry. It's a little less awkward when I'm closer."

Again Adrisse reached the book over to be read, his expression indeed sorry. He ducked his head and subconsciously rubbed the back of his collar. Usually, he was sitting a bit closer, where the person he was chatting with could look over his shoulder so it flowed a bit more naturally until the weirdness wore off.

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) Empty Re: Naked & Afraid (Adrisse)

Post by Cole Sun Aug 01, 2021 11:30 pm

ELIAS

Even though Elias could tell that Adrisse wanted to hear more from him, his nerves had already overpowered him by then, and the mild-mannered incubus could no longer muster up the courage to continue. Instead, he gave his new acquaintance an apologetic, sheepish glance. Even in his acquaintance's sincerity, Elias couldn't feel anything other than embarrassment through his own joy.

There was an awkward pause between the two after that, and with every moment of silence, Elias filled the gaps with his own worry-filled thoughts. It was during that moment that he heard the sound of a pen scratching against paper, Adrisse beginning to scribble something in his notebook yet again, to which Elias curiously glanced over to watch. Without even asking, he apologetically confirmed Elias's suspicions about his muteness. Even while Adrisse explained the situation with an acceptable amount of detail and clearly meant no harm, there was still a lot of unease coming over Elias. This sort of thing had never happened before, and what's more, he was definitely going to get in more trouble than he signed up for now that he lied to some thugs. If they find out, there's just not telling what they'd do to him or this library, and the regret of impulsively defending this Neko was beginning to sink in. But even so, he'd feel himself soften up just a bit when he looked at Adrisse and his elegant handwriting—he couldn't just... leave him. Not yet, anyway.

"Uhm... I'm going to go look and see if I have a change of clothes for you, and I guess I should close the library for today, too. I'll be right back, so don't t-touch anything, al-alright?" Elias stiffened as he began to stand up meander away. Dealing with the aftermath of his decision made him a little irritable in his quiet panic, his eyes squinting into something of glare as he looked at Adrisse. It wasn't so much of a glare of contempt than a squint of a demonata trying to keep himself from tearing up.

The Next Day

After finding a change of clothes for Adrisse to wear, Elias practically left the Neko alone for the rest of the day. He'd periodically return to that corner of the library to see if he was still there, but he tried to do it in secret and didn't say anything to him while doing so. Even though their interactions were cordial and relatively open, it was clear that the incubus didn't seem to like him too much, or at least not enough to even speak with him.

Truth was, he was just at a complete loss for what to do! He locked the doors to the main library last night, hoping to keep the Neko inside and separate from the reception area, and surely it did the trick whether Adrisse was aware of it or not. Not only that, he kept the library closed altogether until he could figure out what to do with his unwanted(?) fugitive. He was too anxious to speak with him again after giving him a change of clothes, and yet terribly desperate to get him out that he ended up cracking under the stress and intermittently cried throughout the night.

Even so, he still managed to be comfortable enough to prepare breakfast for him... if you could call it that. It was the same thing he served to him yesterday, and coffee as black as it could be.

"Adrisse? Are you awake?" Elias peeked around the corner, his eyes pink and puffy from surely a troubled night of little rest. He wore a black turtleneck and a thick, pink blanket that stayed dangling from his shoulders. Clearly, he lived here. "I've... uh... I've brought something for you... and stuff..."

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) Empty Re: Naked & Afraid (Adrisse)

Post by Ashelyn Tue Aug 03, 2021 7:11 am

As rough as he'd looked before, it couldn't be said that the anthro didn't clean up nice. Dressed in a black tunic, gray sweater, and brown trousers wasn't exactly a high-fashion combo, but being given anything as fine as these, even if they were throwaways, was more than he'd could ask for. A few quick splashes of water had his skin cleaned and light brown hair smoothed down into a nice style. The neko was presentable and seemed to feel a bit better now that he looked less like a slave, but outward things could only soothe so much.

Adrisse had done exactly as he was told. He hadn't touched a thing. Once he was consigned to his corner, he hadn't moved other than once or twice when he'd had to use the bathroom. He spent most of the time staring longingly at the books he couldn't touch, wondering what they said inside and making up his own ideas for what was on the pages from the titles alone. Judging books by their covers wasn't ideal, but it was all he had...that, and the crushing awkwardness, panic of not knowing what to do next, and book he scribbled poems in every now and then. When he wasn't dealing with any of that, he curled up and slept with his tail wrapped tightly around his waist.

He'd been asleep when Elias finally spoke to him again, which jarred him awake so violently that he banged his back and the back of his skull against the wall. For a split second he wore the terrified expression he'd had when he'd been hunkered down in his self-made tower of literature, but it cleared after a few moments. He ducked his head in a forlorn apology, his own eyes a bit swollen.

Though he was very thankful for all that Elias had done for him thus far, things he knew the demonata had no obligation to do, he also knew when his presence was unwanted and a burden. It weighed heavily on his face and in the stern downward arch of his mouth. He'd likely not find much more kindness here if he continued to linger. A decent nights rest, some food, and some dry clothes was more than he could have hoped for, though he'd been unwarrantedly optimistic about making a new friend or having a long chat.

Slowly getting to his feet, he padded closer with a note in his hand. He laid it on the cart near Elias, bowed deeply for a moment, then proceeded to stick a small loaf of bread in his mouth and fill his pockets with whatever else would fit. He was preparing to leave.

"Thank you so much for what you've done for me. I wish to cause you no more trouble. Please unlock the back door and I'll leave. Does the alley behind this building lead to the city gate?"

Though he'd put on as much of a hardened expression as he could, the young man was blatantly terrified. The set of his brows, the tremble in his hands and lips, he seemed like one loud noise away from either bolting or breaking down. This had been his first night of freedom since he was a young child. It went better than he hoped and was obviously better than slavery, but change was always scary, even when it was for the good. And it was dangerous. His freedom would not be easily kept for perhaps his whole life. That thought alone was exhausting. Though he never intended to go back, part of him wondered if it was worth it.

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) Empty Re: Naked & Afraid (Adrisse)

Post by Cole Mon Sep 06, 2021 3:31 am

ELIAS

Although he spent most of his night stressing out and contemplating over his new, troubling circumstances when Elias caught glimpse of the b0y who braced himself for the harsh reality waiting beyond these library doors, he had a moment of clarity. The two of them weren't friends and had only spent one night together in the library, but Elias knew that Adrisse wasn't a bad person. The situation that led the Neko boy here now was nothing short of unplanned and unpleasant, but whether it was out of pity or loneliness, the thought of bidding farewell to this fugitive made Elias far more uneasy.

It seemed like Adrisse was ready to embark on his journey, and so he and the demonata stood there across from one another, the smell of unsweetened coffee filling that corner of the quaint library aisles. But Elias didn't say anything when he saw what Adrisse wrote down, instead squinting at it with his puffy, sleep-deprived eyes. It was so clear what was going to happen to Adrisse if he left right now, but Elias couldn't stop his thoughts from bleeding into his tongue before he could catch it.

"He's not gonna last..." mumbled Elias in a moment of carelessness, his dark eyes soft with concern. But the comment wasn't meant for Adrisse's ears, because as he said it, the incubus's face lit up in a popping pink of embarrassment, and his eyes widened when he realized that he said that out loud. "T-Th-That is—I didn't mean—I—what I meant is...!"

Elias began to stutter over his fumbling and jumbling of words, every attempt at remedying his mistake suddenly making him even more embarrassed and remorseful than before. But after his fantastic failure at coming with a proper response to Adrisse's departure, he ended up blurting out what came first to his head.

"Y-You don't have anywhere to go, right? The real librarian doesn't return for at least another two days, s-so you should just stay... if you'd like," Elias bashfully offered, fidgeting in place as he stood before his fugitive acquaintance. Unfortunately, the embarrassment of the whole ordeal suffocated him and his would remain that sheepish pink the entire time as the sudden eagerness and sincerity waded away. "...It's uhm... it's none of my business, so..."

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) Empty Re: Naked & Afraid (Adrisse)

Post by Ashelyn Tue Sep 07, 2021 5:05 am

Though Adrisse probably should have been offended or terrified by Elias's slip of the tongue, he removed the bread from his mouth to reveal a smile playing on his formerly quivering lips. He had to raise the back of his hand to stifle his silent snicker, though the movement itself was less to conceal it and more out of coy dramatics. Yes, the words themselves were real enough, but the demonata's own reaction to them was what sent him.

A surprise offer followed and brought on a surprised expression, and then the hasty replacement of all the snacks he'd pocketed. Since he had more time, there was no sense in walking around covered in food like some urchin.

"Then I will be happy to stay two more days. While death is a form of freedom I'll accept when faced with recapture, I'll take any stolen breaths I can before then. Thank you."

He returned to snacking on the bread, now pulling pieces off to eat it properly instead of desperate devouring. In between crusty tugs, he continued writing in this book after Elias had read the former message, now offering more words.

"If I'm to stay for two more days, can you give me some tasks to help with? Or pick some books for me to read? I don't want to be a burden or make anything difficult for you. Also, do I need to hide when customers arrive?"

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) Empty Re: Naked & Afraid (Adrisse)

ELIAS

Although Adrisse's charmed reaction to Elias's fumbling was a little embarrassing, the mild-mannered demonata felt a small wave of relief come over him when the fugitive agreed to stay. Sometimes time passed too quickly in this library when he had his hands on a good book, but considering their precarious circumstances, Elias was becoming convinced that they wouldn't have much time to indulge in the classic poetry of Adgar Ellen Boe or the fantastic world of fiction. But that being said, they couldn't just sit around and do nothing for two whole days!

"Oh! Well..." Elias lowered his head as he thought about his chores, but helping keep this place afloat became so engrained in his routine that all of it somehow became thoughtless and automatic. When he had to actually think about it, he couldn't help but struggle to muster up a task list. In other words, Adrisse was becoming more and more purposeless the more he thought about it. "We get really busy when people come to pick up or return their books, so I guess you could help me with that... and maybe dusting? Ah, no. I did that..."

The more Elias spoke to Adrisse, the more it seemed like he was speaking to himself. He was so used to being alone all of the time that he never had much of a reason to keep his thoughts to himself. He didn't really even seem aware of it.

But after careful deliberation, Elias finally looked up and squinted at his fugitive company with this critical look in his eyes. More specifically, he was staring (perhaps glaring) at Adrisse's iconic Neko ears.

"You don't have to hide, but we may need to do something about those ears of yours. I'd hate to see those guys come back here again because someone tipped them off that there was a Neko here..." Elias continued to eyeball Adrisse's features with the sickly puffiness around his eyes, his hands tightly clutching to his blanket, "You understand why, right?"

Naked & Afraid (Adrisse) Empty Re: Naked & Afraid (Adrisse)

The young man nodded enthusiastically to helping with customers, excited about being useful as well as being able to touch and maybe leaf through the books going in and out. That was far more preferable to cleaning, which it seemed Elias had already done while he was sleeping. The smile returned, small, but hopeful.

As his ears were glared at, they twitched in the attention they were given, perky one moment and then flattened against his head in the next as the helpful Eldritch explained. With a forlorn nod, he reached up to flatten them more with his hands self-consciously, though he knew that was no solution. Elias hadn't provided a hat that he knew of. No scarf or hooded article of clothing. Casting his eyes around as if he'd magically find something to help him amongst the books and shelves proved fruitless and rather stupid.

Back to his beautiful penmanship.

"Do you have a hat?"

The flourish of his pen didn't match the simplicity of the short question, but it was how Adrisse did things. As he stood there once more looking for more help from this poor burritoed librarian, he couldn't help but think about what a bother being an Anthros at all was. Not only did your problems seem to become everyone else's in some way, but you were also marginalized by nearly everyone and at worst enslaved. Just for being born with features people compared to animals. Was there no where safe other than Ilyanor? That's where he was thinking of running to, though he couldn't wrap his mind around how he'd get there.

"Or maybe a jacket with a hood? I could make a hat out of folded paper, but somehow I imagine that would be more conspicuous...What is a poor Neko to do?"
